Keep checking back with us. We have a definite shortage of time to spend as much time on our Blog as we would like. Our priority is always our store at WineCooler4U.com. But, we keep writing, wanting to keep as much of it as possible fun and light.

I am going to assume you are like most people who make their own wine. You are doing it for the fun, you are serious about the process but this wine is not for long term storage. Keep the reds in the dark bottles. Since you seem to have lighter colored bottles as well, put the whites in them. Most importantly, treat the product of your adventure as you would any wine you buy at the store. Keep it away from heat and light, keep it cool (not in fridge).
My wife and I made wine at one of those stores that sell kits and help you do the processing. We had a lot of fun, learned a lot about wine making, had a great bottling party at the store, then opened the bottles periodically over a 5 year period. We did the best two reds and the best Port. Most of the openings left something to be desired. By the end of the bottles, the wines were beginning to taste like "real wine". We concluded that a Trader Joe's under $10/bottle is where we had gotten to. As for the Port, in the end, it was a decent red after dinner wine. A friend of ours did a Port at the same time, doubling the brandy, yielding a high octane drink. Was it Port? Well, no.
If your sweet red requires the addition of a brandy at the end make it a cheap one. You won't be able to tell the difference. We got that advice from the wine maker at Kalyra Winery in Santa Ynez, CA.
