Selecting Furniture for Outdoor Wine Drinking

With October in full swing and the leaves already changing from green to their autumnal hues, I’m really beginning to miss summer. It was nice to arrive home from work with plenty of daylight left, whiling away the hours outside with my family. These days, it gets dark before I even leave the parking lot at work. As silly as it might sound, I’ve already begun to make plans for next spring.

For starters, I’ve picked out a steamer chair that will fit nicely on the front stoop. That’s the spot I’ve reserved for summer evenings. We’ve been talking about upgrading the outdoor furniture for some time, and I’m finally going to do something about it. My wife and I like to enjoy a glass of wine out there as we survey the activities around our neighborhood, so I’ve also taken the liberty of investing in a small wine refrigerator so we can always have a bottle ready to drink.

Using an Extension Cord with Your Wine Cooler

The User Manual for your wine cooler clearly states that extension cords are not to be used.

Well, here is a bit more information on the subject to help with your wine cooler planning.  The following is quoted from information posted on the Vinotemp website.

We strongly recommend against the use of an extension cord. However, if you still select to use an extension cord, it is absolutely necessary that it is a UL LISTED 3-wire grounding type appliance extension cord. The marked rating of the extension cord should be 115 V, 15 A. or equivalent and not greater than 15 ft in length.

  • Get the User Manual (click on the links to go to the manufacturer websites):
  • Avanti - enter the model number in the box to find your manual.
Danby -  scroll down the page to find the cooler you ordered.  Click on its product name then click on the Literature tab.  Usually, you will find the user guide and a spec sheet.  Click on “Download PDF”.
Vinotemp - Find the model you ordered and click on “Owners Manual”.

  • It’s planned location must be on a firm surface able to hold the weight of the cooler and a full load of bottles.
  • It must be located away from direct sun and other sources of heat, such as stove, heater, refrigerator, dishwasher.
  • Space must be left around the unit for air circulation.  Check the user manual for specifics as the requirements vary.
  • Do not build in your wine cooler unless the manual specifically states that it can be built in.
  • Do not locate in a garage or basement unless the manual states that this can be done.
  • It is common that a wine cooler user manual clearly states that extension cords are not to be used. Here is an bit more information on the subject.  The following is a quote from the Vinotemp website.

Upon arrival:

  • It is recommended that you retain all original packing materials until you are satisfied that your wine cooler is functioning properly – 30 days or so. If the product has to be returned – which is rare – it must be re-packed in its original packaging.
  • If  you experience any problems in the first 30 days, you should call your supplier.  If your wine cooler fails during its warranty period, you should call the manufacturer.
  • Clean the interior with lukewarm water and leave the doors open for it to dry.
  • Before plugging in your cooler, let it stand for the time specified – typically 4 – 48 hours depending upon its design and cooling method.

Load it up:

  • If you cooler is a big one, add bottles a case at a time and allow the cooler temp to adjust.
