Keep You Best Wines in a Wine Cooler

posted by Jerry @ 7:38 AM

Not all wines improve with time. In fact, a vast majority of wines produced are ready to drink and do not have much potential for aging. Only a rare few will last longer than a decade.

For those wines that will age, at least somewhat, and for all of the others from which you can select for tonight’s dinner, keep them in a Cavavin wine cooler.

Cavavin 146 Bottle Majestika Wine Cellar

Cavavin 146 Bottle Majestika Wine Cellar

The Cavavin Majestika wine cellars are Cavavin’s elegant wooden wine cellars.  There are 18 models, sharing the same specifications for the basic units.  The capacity of these cellars varies from 33 bottles to 406 in small enough increments that getting the appropriate capacity will be easy.  You can view the models in our Majestika Cavavin Majestika Wooden Wine Cellars category.  Note: the 146 bottle cellar above is the equivilent of two of the 73 bottle cellars.  Then, using the door, color, door sculpting and more options you can turn it into your dream cellar to keep your wines safe and ready to enjoy.  Choosing the Majestika wine cellar size that fits your needs and desires is primarily a process of selecting the combination of a capacity and dimensions.

The table below contains the dimensions and bottle capacity of each of the cellars.  Notice that the entries appear in pairs.  Each pair shares a common height and depth.  And, the second model of each pair holds twice as many bottles (See the Bottle column).  So, for each pair, the larger cabinet, holding twice as many bottles, achieves this by increasing its width.

As a further aid to deciding which cellar is best for you, the second table has the same content as the first but is sorted by cabinet width.  Our observations have been that the width tends to be the most important of the three dimensions when considering where to place a cellar in a room.

Should I Buy a Large Wine Cooler

For most wine lovers, a large wine cooler is perfect for keeping a large variety of wines.

Danby 75 Bottle Wine Cooler

My primary motivator in wine consumption is having a wide selection of wines to choose from at all times.  Many from the U.S. But, also, from France, Spain, Italy (the whole country), Argentina and Chili.  I have dry reds and whites,  aperitifs, Sauternes, roses, ports, a variety of late-harvest choices and always a few bubblies.  My wines are not old, few are expensive.  As you can see though, I have choices — always!  It is easy to see that I could not have such a range of wine unless my wine cooler were “larger”.

I have a 75 bottle single zone wine cooler.  I keep only a very limited number of bottles longer than a year. If I were replacing it today, I would do so with a 150 bottle unit.  The weakness of the one I have is that it is always 3/4 full, so even buying a case is problematic.  Given such a wide range of wines, I get along just fine with the single zone cooler set at 55 degrees as I do not expect to take the wine from the cooler and drink it.  I cool it further or let it warm a bit before drinking at the proper temperature.  Though not required, I use a Vinotemp Single Bottle Chiller to keep the wine at proper drinking temperature while it is open.

Avanti 149 Bottle Wine Cooler

If you currently have no cooler or one under 40 bottles, a jump to 150 bottles is a bit much for most people as it is almost a 4-fold increase in capacity.  So, in my description of a few large coolers I am including a 75 bottle unit.  (There are many choices in the 50 – 100 bottle range as well.  That’s for another day.)  Beyond that we will briefly describe units up to 267 bottles with metal cabinets.  There are any number of wooden units to choose from in the large sizes.  I am not going to cover them in this Post.

All of the large coolers covered here have slide out shelves.  This is because, if you want to take advantage of variety you have to be able to get at the wines easily, in my opinion. So, here we go.

Danby 166 Bottle Silhouette Executive Wine Cellar

First, that 75 bottle unit.  The Danby 75 Bottle Wine Cooler (DWC612BLP).  This cooler has 11 beechwood fixed shelves; giving easy access to all of its contents, a reveresable glass door, interior lighting and easy-to-use controls.  If you put one row of bottles on each shelf the capacity drops a bit to 65 bottles.

Avanti 149 Bottles (WCR683DZD-1). This is a two-zone cooler holds about 75 bottles in each zone.  The door has stainless trim.  Most shelves are pull out. The Avanti 166 bottle cooler (WC681BG) is somewhat larger, has a black trim door a single cooling zone and is lower cost. Both of these units are for stand alone applications only.

Danby 166 Bottle Silhoette Executive Wine Cooler (DWC166BLSRH). This is a two-zone cooling with 13 cherry with stainless trim slide-out shelves making for convenient bottle access. The door is glass with stainless steel trim.  It is designed for standalone or built-in use.
