Oggi Nautilus Corkscrew; Recommended by Cook’s Illustrated

Over the years, we have struggled with a multitude of devices to open wine bottles fresh from our wooden wine cellar.  We may have found the best of the best.

Cook’s Illustrated wanted to find a wine bottle opener that, in their words  “… could cleanly and effortlessly remove any type of cork, took minimal cajoling (the fewer steps, the better), and fit neatly in a drawer. ”

Of the 17 models tested, two earned a “Recommended” rating: the Oggi Nautilus and the Metrokane Vertical Rabbit. (Metrokane is not new here at the WineCooler4U Blog. More on that later).

Oggi Nautilus

Oggi Nautilus - approx. $25.

Cook’s Illustrated said:

Compact and easy to use, this lever-style model fits securely over the bottle and sports a long handle for plenty of leverage. It even features a foil cutter and an extra corkscrew worm. The cork emerged from the bottle cleanly and easily, and came neatly off the worm with a second pump of the handle.

Metrokane Vertical Rabbit

Metrokane Vertical Rabbit - approx. $50

Cook’s Illustrated said:

Very similar to our winner in design and performance, this pricier lever-style model was “sleek enough for James Bond to use” and effortlessly removed the cork with a simple push-pull motion. The only downfall? It’s on the bulky side for storage.

Returning to Metrokane. On February 17, we recommended the Metrokane “rabbit Bottle Stopper” as being the best of every bottle stopper we have used (and we have opened many, many wine bottles).  This suggests we should look at the other products from Metrokane.  Maybe there is a secret being kept here.
